As they say, the best way to forget about a slump is to get on a winning streak. Especially away from home. Especially making up ground to NL West leaders *and* NL Wild Car race at the same time.

I still have my reservations about whether Wilson Betemit is for real and can keep up his recent godd plate discipline. I still don't like having Julio "trouble at home" Lugo as our second baseman, but as long as the team keeps winning, I might as well tab them as positive breakthrough influence that the Dodgers might have needed. And that without even seeing a single change-up from Greg Maddux (to be seen later this evening in southern Ohio).

Anyway, here are my thoughts after the first two games:

(1) Wilson Betemit is surely wearing the exact shirt Dannys Baez used to wear! Not only is the number (10) the same, but it's the very same item: Betemit looked as if his body muscles were to protrude right out of the fabric. Funny :)

(2) Neither Nomah, nor Russell are leading MVP candidates on this team. Andre Ethier is. Full-stop.

(3) Did you notice that Takashi Saito is yet to blow a save this year? He's perfect 10-for-10 in SV/SVO and has only just replaced Baez as team leader in saves. Is this good (winning by a large margin) or bad (not nearly winning as frequently as expected) for the Dodgers to have their closer have only 10 saves on August 3?

(4) I hope Maddux and Aaron Milton put on a show and pitcher's duel tonight. With the outcome of the sweep for the Dodgers :).

Trade Deadline Approaches

As expected the Yankees made a nice deal heading into the trade deadline. They managed to pick up Abreau and a pitcher from the Phillies for 4 minor league players? How do they do that? How did they get two quality players from the majors in exchange for 4 guys who have never played in the majors? How does that work? Ohh well. The deadline is at 4pm today so hopefully between know and then the Sox will make some kind of move. Another good starting pitcher wouldn't be bad and neither would some bullpen help. Ship Tavarez and Seanez away for the love of god.
In game action the team took two out of three from the A's in Oakland. I wish I could tell you more about these games but they were on past my bed time (yes I'm an old man). We did put up 13 runs in the Tuesday game. That's always nice.
Over the weekend the boys were back in Fenway. Friday night was a tough loss 8-3. Things were close until the 6th inning and then it got out of hand. The highlight of the game was definitely Papi scoring from 1st base on a Manny double. His slide into home plate was more like a complete collapse. It was funny stuff. He's a funny dude. Saturday was a great win. Sadly it was not on TV here in the DC area. They elected for the 4:05 nats and dodgers game on the west coast. Ick. We we're down 6-3 going into the 8th. With the help of Manny and Papi we tied it up and sent it to extra innings. Papi came up in the 11th with 2 on. The Angels had the Papi shift on with most of the team in right field. Papi sent a little shot into left field and the game was over. Well done.
Last night was not pretty. It was the first game I actually had a chance to sit down and watch in quite a while. If only it had been a better game to watch. Schilling was not himself and things got ugly. He gave up three HR's in the 3rd and was just plain getting shelled. We managed to have a little rally to bring the score to 6-4 but then the tag team of Van Buren and Tavarez gave them 4 more runs to make it 10-4. I gave up at that point. Bummer.
On a total side note I would like to say what a crime I think the price of gas is these days. How can they charge us the highest gas prices ever and make a 10 billion dollar profit in three months? How does that work? Exxon makes $1300 something dollars a second. That is profit! How can they justify gas at $3+ a gallon when they are making that kind of money. Ohh wait, I know. Since GW is sucking all their dicks it is A-ok. Fucking cock sucker.
That is all. Hopefully we'll make a nice pick up today. The next three days are suppoused to be like living on the surface of the sun. what fun.

Dodgers 1B Coach Mariano Duncan Fined, Suspended

Dodgers first base coach Mariano Duncan was fined and suspended for two games for an episode in last Friday's game in which he threw down his hat.

The Dodgers Game

Yesterday we went to a Dodgers game. Los Angeles has 2 major league baseball teams: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (of California, and so on...little bit of a joke); (and the ones we have the season tix for); and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Why then, you ask, did we go to a Dodgers game? Well, Frankie is in the Buena Park Little League, and their team, the Cardinals, got a chance to parade around Dodgers stadium right before the game. Something about National League vs. American League. His team was affiliated with the Dodgers instead of the Angels.

And, it was also autograph day for kids under 14. So, while Frank was getting Frankie to the parade, Steven and I took a brand new MLB baseball (used for autographs) and stood in a line 1/4 length of the stadium, in hopes of getting an autograph from one of the Dodgers. After standing in line for about an hour--it wasn't too bad, the weather was sunny but not hot, and the view was great; Hollywood is on one side and LA is kind of at a right angle--so we did ok. But just as we made it up to the autograph tent, they called all the players out so they could go warm up for the game. Darn. But, they left the veteran players, so we got autographs from Bobby Costillo and Rudy Law. (Like I know who they are. Someone famous, and I wouldn't even know it :o) It was a good game too--the Dodgers won, and Steven took a nap. YES!

Last but not least, we did get to see a couple of famous folks and we actually knew who they were: Harrison Ford was there with his girl, Calista Flockhart. Of course, they had a private box, and we only saw them because they got put on the big screen. But it was still neat to think that we were probably only about 100 yards from Indiana Jones. (He's actually looking kind of old; sporting a full beard that's mostly white.) Also saw some NFL player, Warren Moon; again, wouldn't know him if I saw him on the street, but Frank knew who he was. Once they pointed him out, we looked down and saw him in the stands live, so Frank took this picture. He's the one with the mint green shirt. Cool, huh? Course, we're in the nosebleed section at the tip top of the stadium, so Warren's features are a little indistinguishable, but trust me, it's him.

All Baseball, All the Time

BY MICHAEL WATT

The Yankee-Red Sox game is on the tube as this is being written. Monday my older son’s high school team played for the Long Island Championship (they won). Over the weekend all of the ball games my sons and I were scheduled to play in (five in total) were postponed because of rain or wet conditions. So what did I do? I went to see my nephew’s high school team play for the Long Island Championship (bigger high school division. They won, too). That’s what I did. This baseball thing is out of control. Is there such a thing as Baseball Anonymous?

Now I love the sport and I love watching my sons play it. I even signed up to play softball in one of those “Over The Hill” leagues on Sunday nights. But between watching my sons play, playing myself and then of course all the extracurricular activities related to my participation as a board member in the local Little League, it seems as my life has been taken over by the horsehide sphere. It’s as if baseball is my god and I am one of its…well, I can’t say what but to paraphrase Mrs. Bush it rhymes, sort of, with 108 stitches.

See, now, that’s what I mean. Only a nudnik would know that the standard baseball comes with 108 stitches. I need a life.

It shouldn’t surprise me that baseball encompasses so much of my daily existence – that’s the way it’s always been. My childhood friend Dr. Mike the Chiropractor once told me that there was a time in our youth when he forgot what color hair I had because I was always sporting a baseball cap. What few home movies my family has feature a little boy (me) running around making “safe” and “out” signs as if I were an umpire. What? Other kids didn’t do that? That’s not normal? Of course it’s not. If you watched those movies and you didn’t know any better you would think my parents fed me crack for breakfast.

The first date I ever went on involved, you guessed it, a baseball game. The date fell on the Fourth of July and I thought there was a fireworks show at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. My beloved and I walked there from her parents’ house. No fireworks, though. Just two teams of unknown origin playing a game under the lights. We stayed to watch and I think I treated her to a box of candy at the snack stand. Remarkably, this young lady saw fit to be my girlfriend for another nine months. I did notice, however, a marked reluctance on her part to speak to me when I saw her at the 20th high school reunion a few years back.

I played ball in Little League and CYO and then, of course, high school. With each passing year, however, it became increasingly evident that “professional baseball player” was not going to appear anywhere on my resume. Sadly, the end of my high school baseball career was rather ugly and as a result I ended up virtually ignoring the game for a couple of years. That stretch, 1976 and 1977, coincided with a sparkling run of great baseball by the Yankees – the team I suffered watching in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Just another instance of my ship coming in and I’m at the corner luncheonette, buying a paper and a cup of coffee.

The remarkable Yankee comeback in 1978 brought me back and by the time I graduated from college and started working in New York City in the early 1980s I was back full time. In 1983 I started dating my wife, Sharon. It took me some time to muster the courage to introduce the notion of watching baseball as an entertainment alternative into our relationship. (Sharon was never a big fan). I started out slowly and gently at first, with a seemingly innocuous changing of the station on the car radio “just for a second to see what the score is.” Then I convinced her to watch the All-Star game with me and that night something clicked. I’m not sure if it was the majesty of the hit and run or the sight of 50 or so healthy young men running around in skin-tight pants that did the trick and quite frankly I do not care. Baseball was no longer anathema to Sharon and I would not dispute the argument that Sharon’s embracing of the game was the first major deposit in the bank of knowledge that led me to believe that she was The One for me.

I am also proud of the fact that one of the highlights (there were many) of our Honeymoon in New England in the fall of 1985 was the evening we spent at Fenway Park, watching the Red Sox take on the Tigers of Detroit. Since then my wife and I and our sons have visited nearly ten other baseball parks around the country (Yankee, Shea, Camden Yards, Wrigley, The Jake in Cleveland, The Big A in Anaheim, Dodger Stadium, Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and Petco Park in San Diego). This summer - after Alex is done playing for his two travel teams and Max is done with the Williamsport and local baseball tournaments - our vacation plans are to fly to Seattle, watch the Mariners play the Yankees at Safeco Field and then drive to San Francisco to see the Giants play. In between we’ll stop in Oregon somewhere and do something touristy, seeing as Oregon does not have a baseball park that we are aware of.

So it is a baseball life for me and my family. This weekend we are off to Binghamton to watch Alex’s team participate in the State Championships. We’re all pretty excited because we hear Binghamton is beautiful this time of year – at least when there’s a baseball game going on.

Thank you for reading this column.

Dodgers Stadium

Currently, Dodger Stadium is one of the few Major League Baseball stadiums without the name of a corporate sponsor as part of the title.
